Child’s Play Turned Phenomenal Sight: Cirque Du Soleil’s Quidam

Cirque du Soleil is known for its out of this world performances that stun and amaze audiences all over the world. Some of their performances have been called outlandish with plotlines that may be a bit unusual, but the same cannot be said for Quidam, which is currently touring nationwide. The show follows the journey of a young girl who is feeling neglected by her parents and escapes into a fantastical world. In true Cirque du Soleil style the show features acrobatic feats and jump roping or ‘skipping’ unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

Searching for Meaning in Life

The show follows a young girl, Zoe, who feels distanced and neglected by her parents. In order to escape the truth of her everyday life, Zoe enters the world of Quidam. This imaginary place is full of characters that encourage Zoe to free herself, according to the show’s website. The show is about breaking the faceless person from the crowd and showcasing their individuality.

One of the stars of the show, Adrienn Banhegyi, Quidam’s star rope skipper, spoke with 303 Magazine. She explained that this show relates so much to everyday life that it stands out from other Cirque du Soleil shows. Banhegyi is from Hungary and before joining Cirque du Soleil she was part of the National Skipping Team where she nabbed the world record for double dutch speed. She explained that Quidam features one of her most challenging tricks as a rope skipper—the release. It is one trick that she says she always has to pay special attention to because it is so risky. Her act is one of Cirque du Soleil fame as they have taken this beloved children’s game and turned it into an art of dance and acrobatics. The act of the show featuring Banhegyi also features more than a dozen other skippers performing solo and duo jumps.

According to the show’s website the performance, in addition to rope skipping, features the following acts:

–          Aerial contortion in silk

–          Banquine

–          Cloud swing

–          Diabolos

–          German wheel

–          Hand balancing

–          Spanish webs

–          Statue

–          Aerial hoops

–          Juggling

Jump Into the Fantasy World
